Mayor tells STF that Natal inspects traffic and noise pollution on blocked roads

The mayor of Natal (RN), Álvaro Costa Dias (PSDB-RN), sent a manifestation to the Federal Supreme Court in which he says that, since the beginning of the protest, he has been ordering traffic through the body in charge of organizing the city’s traffic , as well as inspections on noise pollution.

“There is, in fact, a spontaneous and orderly movement on the part of the population, without any behavior that could characterize intentional obstruction of public roads, such as the use of barricades”, said the mayor.

Last week, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), summoned the mayor to demonstrate after the state Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that the politician would be failing to comply with orders to unblock the streets of the city where demonstrations take place.

The MP-RN told the Supreme Court that demonstrators had blocked Avenida Hermes da Fonseca since the result of the second round of the presidential elections was announced.

According to the mayor, guidance work is being carried out so that none of the lanes on the avenue are improperly occupied by vehicles and, in case of resistance, a fine will be applied.

“And, in the event that any abusive act on the part of the population remains characterized, it is up to the Military Police of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, to disperse protests that exceed normality”, he said.

The mayor also recalled that a decision by Moraes made it clear that it is up to the Military Police to clear streets, as long as it is an illicit obstruction.

“It should also be noted that there is no mention in the decision that the Municipal Guard should intervene in a similar case”, he said.

“In addition, it should be clarified that even though it is not the responsibility of the Municipality of Natal, the Military Police Command has already been provoked to intervene in the event of any intentional and arbitrary obstruction of public roads, and it is not a municipal role to direct the operations of the Military Police ”, he concluded.
