Mayor urges end to looting in Russian-controlled Kherson city

The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Kherson, Ihor Kolykhaiev, on Thursday urged people to stop looting and stealing food.

Kolykhaiev declared on Wednesday (2) that Ukraine’s military is no longer in the locality and that its inhabitants must now comply with the instructions of “armed people who have come to the administration of the city”, indicating a control by Russia.

“The city needs food and industrial products. This is especially for the most unprotected sections of the population. I appeal to all owners of supermarkets, large stores, warehouses, food stores and anyone who finds this message useful,” Kolykhaiev said in a post on social media.

“The city is ready to take control of the distribution of its remaining products. We guarantee that it will arrive where it is most expected – hospitals, orphanages, pensioners, the needy, families with many children, social categories, etc.

Meanwhile, Yaroslav Kontsevyi, a resident of Kherson, told CNN that the Russian occupiers have placed checkpoints and sniper points at key locations in the city.

Kontsevyi says Russian forces are stopping Ukrainian civilians and asking if they will fight on the Russian or Ukrainian side in the event of mobilization.

Kherson is strategically important in a Black Sea inlet with a population of nearly 300,000. The control of the locality marks a significant moment of the conflict, as it is the first major city taken by Russia.
