MEC issue gained greater dimension due to the election year, says Carlos Viana

In the opinion of senator Carlos Viana (PL-MG), who recently confirmed to the CNN who accepted the invitation of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to be the next government leader in the Senate, the recent denunciations that reached the Ministry of Education took on greater proportions than necessary “because it is an election year”.

The complaints deal with suspicions that former Minister of Education Milton Ribeiro practiced undue benefits in the allocation of public funds from the MEC, through the intermediation of pastors Arilton Moura and Gilmar Santos, who would collect bribes from mayors.

The case made the opposition to the government begin to collect signatures for the establishment of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the case. However, in an interview with CNN this Friday (8), Viana pointed out that the government understands “that this news will not be confirmed”.

Regarding the statement by the opposition to the government, which says it has the 27 signatures necessary for the opening of the commission, the senator said he does not believe “that the CPI has reached 27 signatures”.

According to him, three parliamentarians removed their names from the list. Viana, however, did not reveal the names of the senators.

“The government is not afraid of CPI, anything can be done, there is no involvement of the federal government in this issue. Whatever comes, you can be sure the government will be ready to respond with transparency and tranquility,” he said.

The next government leader in the Senate also considered that the hearing held by the president of the National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE), Marcelo Lopes da Ponte, last Thursday (7th) at the Senate Education Committee made it clear that “there was no any loss to the Brazilian taxpayer”.

On the occasion, the manager of the FNDE confirmed that he participated in at least four agendas with these religious, but said that he did not witness “suspicious conversations” on any of the occasions. Ponte said that the transfers of funds to all the municipalities mentioned in the complaints were “provisionally suspended by the FNDE”.

“There is no parallel cabinet, there is no involvement of anyone from the government in this story. The federal government will work with the Federal Police with all exemption and transparency so that the police can say the responsibility of each one in this story”, concluded Viana.
