Media: Apple uses 3nm technology for the following processors in 2023

Apple aims to be the first company to use TSMC’s 3nm chip technology for its products next year. In particular, she plans to implement it for some models of iPhone and Mac computers. This was reported to the Nikkei by sources familiar with Apple’s plans. The A17 mobile processor currently in development will be manufactured using TSMC’s N3E technology. It is expected to appear in the second half of next year in the premium version of the iPhone.

N3E is an upgraded version of TSMC’s current 3nm manufacturing technology that is just starting to be used this year. The sources also added that the next generation of Apple’s M3 chip for Mac computers will also use this process. The N3E is expected to offer better performance and power efficiency as well as cost savings. For example, compared to N5, performance is 18% higher and power consumption is 34% lower.

Apple is TSMC’s largest customer and the main driver of new semiconductor technologies. The American giant will be the first to apply TSMC’s first-generation 3nm technology, using it for select iPad models. Intel previously said it would like to have 3nm manufacturing by the end of this year or early next year to be among the first, but has delayed plans until at least 2024.

In 2023, Apple may once again use TSMC’s advanced chip manufacturing technology for only some of its devices, as it did with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, which are equipped with the latest 4nm A16 processor. Analysts believe that Apple will likely use different levels of manufacturing technology to differentiate between its premium and regular models. Previously, such differences were only in screens and cameras. Meanwhile, the race continues among chip manufacturers to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies. TSMC and Samsung hope to be the first to launch 3nm technology into mass production later this year.
