Hackers gained access to the customer database of the Indian cryptocurrency exchange BuyUCoin. Local newspaper Inc42 reports that 325,000 customer data has been stolen.
The ShinyHunters hacker group got hold of 6 GB of data, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, identification numbers, and details of BuyUCoin customers’ bank accounts. At the same time, Inc42 reports that 325,000 clients of the exchange were affected, and according to the Bleeping Computer portal, hackers stole the data of 161,487 users.
“BuyUCoin didn’t even report a data breach. What if my account was used for illegal activities? ” noted information security specialist Rajshekhar Rajaharia, emphasizing the “irresponsibility” of the exchange.
Initially, representatives of BuyUCoin denied the leakage of customer data, but subsequently issued an official statement according to which “the company has thoroughly investigated the incident.” The statement emphasizes that clients’ funds were not damaged and “are safe.” At the same time, ByuUCoin stores 95% of client funds in cold wallets.
Recall that last year, hackers gained access to customer data from Ledger, a hardware cryptocurrency wallet company. At the same time, the company refused to compensate the injured users.
