Chinese-made OLED displays may appear in new Samsung smartphones. BOE Electronics, China’s largest display manufacturer, will supply them.
According to South Korean media reports, BOE is ready to begin shipping OLED screens for upcoming Samsung mobile devices. The Korean company plans to use Chinese-made panels in its low-cost Galaxy M series smartphones, which will hit the market in the second half of 2021.
Insiders add that these will be flexible OLED panels. They differ from conventional OLED displays in their flexible substrate. Instead of a hard glass backing, they use polyimide plastic to allow the display to bend. Also, flexible OLED panels are thinner and lighter than their counterparts. They can be seen in smartphones with curved displays and foldable devices.
I must say that experts note the high quality of OLED panels produced by BOE. But despite this, the Chinese manufacturer has not yet been able to occupy a large niche in the world market. The main client of BOE has long been the Chinese company Huawei. However, due to US sanctions, Huawei was forced to reduce the production of its smartphones, as a result of which the BOE suffered. The Chinese display manufacturer had to find new customers and turn to Samsung. The terms of Samsung’s deal with BOE were not disclosed. But sources say that the Chinese manufacturer made a unique offer to the Korean giant that it could not refuse. The price and quality of OLED panels manufactured by BOE are fully consistent with Samsung standards and it is likely that the cooperation between the two companies will continue in the future.
