MediaTek leads in the number of processors sold, but lags behind in profit

The American analytical company Counterpoint, which researches the global smartphone market and all related areas, today, June 9, published its report on mobile processors for the first quarter of 2022. According to the company’s infographics, the global market for mobile systems on a chip looks quite standard – for example, MediaTek has the largest share in the shipment of processors. This manufacturer has managed to win 38% of the global mobile processor market in quantitative terms due to a significant focus on affordable chip models.

Mobile processor market shares by units shipped

MediaTek is leading the budget and mid-range processors with the Dimensity 700 and Dimensity 900 series, with 5G chip shipments up 20% year-over-year. In second place in terms of the number of shipped processors is Qualcomm with 30% of the market, in third place is Apple with 15%. However, the situation changes dramatically if we analyze the profit from the sale of mobile processors in the first quarter of this year. Then it turns out that the impressive share of MediaTek does not allow the company to receive significant revenue, because Qualcomm took the place on the podium in this parameter – all thanks to premium processors.

Mobile processor market shares by revenue

Qualcomm, apart from Apple’s decisions, has the best flagship processors on the market, which MediaTek simply has nothing to counter, as does Samsung, which did not break into the top three either in terms of the number of shipped processors or in terms of revenue. But Apple is doing great with a profit – the company took second place, right behind Qualcomm, in the revenue chart for the beginning of 2022, although the manufacturer, of course, does not sell its systems on a chip, like opponents, but installs chips exclusively in its products.
