Medical Correspondent: Know some of the possible causes of tinnitus

In this Wednesday (10) edition of the Medical Correspondent panel, on Novo Dia, neurosurgeon Fernando Gomes spoke about tinnitus, a topic suggested by viewer Ederson Moreira, from Bueno Brandão, Minas Gerais.

For the #CorrespondingMedical on social media, he wrote to the board: “I would like to suggest the topic of ringing in the ear. A year ago, I went through two ENTs. The medications had no effect. The noises annoy me and I don’t sleep. Is it psychological or a hearing problem?”.

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 25 million Brazilians suffer from tinnitus. Fernando Gomes said that the sensation of noise inside the hearing aid is the manifestation of some symptom.

“It can configure a clinical picture of a disease, for example, a tumor in the region, or even something simpler that ends up being very prevalent: hearing loss”, he said.

According to the doctor, hearing loss may be accompanied by tinnitus because the central nervous system is not able to “record” sound information correctly.

“We know that a psychological situation can also increase the relevance of this, which keeps getting in people’s way at all times”, added Gomes.

See below for possible causes and treatment options for tinnitus.

Possible causes

  • Excessive alcohol and cigarettes
  • hormonal changes
  • anatomical disorders

Treatments

  • Hearing aids
  • Therapy to me
  • Complementary therapies (acupuncture, meditation and relaxation)

“[Para tratar zumbido no ouvido], you need to look for a specialist doctor, who is the otorhinolaryngologist, and we always have speech therapy as a therapy that will help throughout the process”, said Fernando Gomes.
