Medical students are punished for prejudiced chants

The city hall of Vassouras, in Rio de Janeiro, announced punishments to medical students who chanted prejudiced songs during university games in the city.

According to Mayor Severino Dias, the Iguaçu University was fined and the fans are unable to participate in the other games. He also said that he will reverse the fine appeal to raffle a motorcycle among motoboys.

Videos that went viral on social media show UNIG fans screaming at opponents in an Intermed match: “I’m a playboy! It’s not my fault if your father is a motoboy”.

The Iguaçu University released a note of clarification in which it says that it is against and vehemently repudiates any type of discrimination, including by social class or financial condition, and that it deeply regrets the episode.

“UNIG also clarifies that it does not interfere with the phrases said by its students, especially in an external environment — therefore, it cannot avoid them — but that, in view of the facts and provisions of its code of ethics and conduct, will adopt all possible measures so that similar episodes do not happen again, as they are contrary to the principles preached by the university”, he announced.

The Intermed league also manifested itself and announced disciplinary measures adopted after the event. Among them: the expulsion of all the fans from the college and the creation of a committee that will evaluate the screams of all the fans.
