Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned on Monday that Moscow would retaliate strongly against new deportations of Russian diplomats announced by Western governments.
“Everyone knows retaliation: it will be symmetrical and disastrous for bilateral relations,” said Medvedev, who is currently vice-president of the Russian National Security Council, via Telegram.
“So who are they punishing? First of all, themselves,” he continued.
On Monday, France announced that another 35 Russian diplomats would be deported because of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, while Germany warned that it would in turn deport a “large number” of Russian diplomats, declaring them personae non gratae.
For the former Russian president, expelling diplomats as a means of exerting pressure is an “absurd” practice, “leads nowhere”.
“If this continues, it would be appropriate, as I wrote on February 26, to close the door on the Western embassies,” Medvedev added. “It will come cheaper to everyone. And in the end we will not see each other except through the sights of weapons.”
