Medvedev: Russia will seize foreign funds in retaliation against the West

LAST UPDATE: 12:38

Russia will respond to the confiscation of Russian citizens and companies abroad by confiscating the capital of Russian citizens and foreign companies in Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of the Security Council, said on Saturday, according to RIA Novosti.

Moscow does not rule out nationalizing the assets of companies registered in the United States, the European Union and other “unfriendly jurisdictions,” Medvedev said.

Russia does not need diplomatic relations with the West after sanctions were imposed on Moscow over Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, as it called it, it said on Saturday.

Medvedev, writing on social media, said it was time to “lock the embassies.”

He said Moscow would continue its operations in Ukraine until it achieved the goals set by President Vladimir Putin.

Medvedev made the comments on his verified page on the Russian social network VK.

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials: Secretary of State Sergei Lavrov, Secretary of Defense Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff General Valery.

The EU also decided to include Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the second round of sanctions, EU High Representative Josep Borrell said at a news conference following the Foreign Affairs Council.
