Meet Doug Emhoff, Kamala’s husband who could become America’s “first gentleman”

Vice President Kamala Harris, who already has enough delegate support to secure the Democratic nomination for the White House, could become the first woman to occupy the Oval Office in US history.

Should Kamala win this potential head-to-head race against former President Donald Trump, another historic event will mark American politics. The vice president’s husband, Doug Emhoff, will become the first “first gentleman” in the country’s history.

Emhoff has already made his mark by becoming the first “second gentleman” of the United States when Kamala took the oath on January 20, 2021.

In Brazil, the husband of a female head of state is called a consort. Emhoff currently uses the official X (formerly Twitter) account @SecondGentleman.

Ahead of Biden and Kamala’s inauguration, he tweeted about his new role.

“I have this growing sense of responsibility. But I know we wouldn’t be here without the support of so many — family, friends and more. Thank you for being by our side as we begin this next chapter.”

Emhoff, a successful entertainment lawyer, married Harris in 2014 when she was California’s attorney general.

Harris is stepmother to Emhoff’s two adult children, Cole and Ella, who affectionately call her “Momala.” [uma brincadeira com Kamala e a palavra ‘mom’, mãe em inglês].

Emhoff’s support throughout Harris’s career is notable, especially during her campaign.

And despite staying out of the spotlight for the most part, Emhoff told GQ magazine about his new role: “I may be the first second gentleman, but I don’t want to be the last.”
