The book “James” from the American writer Percival Everett was recognized in the category Fiction of the Pulitzer Award this Monday (5).
Launched in 2024, the work rereads “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” From Mark Twain, but told from Huckleberry’s friend’s perspective on his trips, Jim, who is a fugitive slave, to illustrate the “absurdity of racial supremacy and provide a new vision about the search for family and freedom.”
In addition to the prize victory, the work won the National Book Award and elected one of the top 10 books of the year by the New York Times Book Review and one of the best fiction books of the last 30 years by Los Angeles Times.
According to Variety, Universal Pictures acquired the film rights of “James” to transform the work into a feature film, which will have the executive production of Steven Spielberg. Also according to information from the portal, Taika Waititi would be in initial negotiations to direct the project.
Throughout his career, Everett, an English professor at the University of Southern California, also published the book “Erasure” in 2001, which recently adapted as “American Fiction” by director Cord Jefferson, who earned him the Oscar for best script adapted in 2024 and was nominated in five categories.
