Meet “Leave One Day”, French musical that opened the Cannes Festival

The movie “Leave One Day” of the director Amélie Bonnin was responsible for opening the 78th edition of the Cannes Festival this Tuesday (13). With the musical, this was the first time that a feature film directed by a woman started the event.

The title is based on Bonnin’s namesake short film, winner of the César 2023 award. The romantic musical revolves around the rising chef Cécile (Juliette Armanet), who is about to realize the dream of opening his own Gourmet restaurant in Paris.

However, the protagonist is forced to suspend the project due to a family emergency when her father suffers a heart attack and needs to return to her hometown.

“I don’t think we talked enough about the father/daughter’s relationship in the movies. Here, I felt that there was an opportunity to talk about this generation of men who were not taught to communicate,” says the director, in a note shared by the festival.

According to the event, Amélie Bonnin “offers a tender movie about relationships, about individuals, about places, about memories – about these invisible wires that have a long time, even over the years and the distances increasing.”

According to Deadline, the film with Juliette Armanet, Bastien Bouillon and François Rollin, was cheered for more than five minutes. Check out the main information from the Cannes 2025 festival.
