Meet Nicaraguan Sheynnis Palacios, winner of Miss Universe 2023

Sheynnis Palacios, from Nicaragua, became the new Miss Universe after winning the 72nd edition of the beauty contest that took place on Saturday night (18) in San Salvador, El Salvador.

The 23-year-old Nicaraguan was one of the favorites for the title and was ahead of Anntonia Porsild, from Thailand, and Moraya Wilson, from Australia.

Palacios competed for the crown alongside 84 women from around the world who appeared before a jury made up of model Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley, TikTok influencer Avani Gregg and two former Misses, Janelle Commissiong, from Trinidad and Tobago (Miss Universe 1977), and Iris Mittenaere, from France (Miss Universe 2016).

In the final round of questions, when only the finalists were left, Palacios responded that, given the choice, she would like to spend a day in the life of Mary Wollstonecraft, an 18th-century British philosopher and feminist she admires. “She was the first woman to fight for women’s rights,” Palacios said.

Who is Sheynnis Palacios?

Sheynnis Palacios, born in Managua, capital of Nicaragua, is 23 years old and is an audiovisual producer. In 2022, Palacios revealed that she graduated in communications from the Central American University (UCA), a Jesuit university that was confiscated in the middle of this year by the government of Daniel Ortega.

Palacios is a mental health activist, a topic she took up after suffering from anxiety issues, according to her profile on the Miss Universe Instagram account. Through “Understand Your Mind”, a podcast in which she interviews experts, the young Nicaraguan offers a space to inform people who experience the same condition as her.

Although he prefers to stay behind the camera, Palacios believes that the spotlight can be used to solve the world’s many problems. His life goal, according to his profile, is “to work in the service of humanity, directing an editorial team and producing content and advertisements for international brands”.

The young Nicaraguan considers herself a resilient person and said, in a brief description of herself in Miss Universe, that if she could have one power it would be to dominate the elements.
