Meet POPL, the Danish burger joint from the restaurant that was once number 1 in the world

There is no way not to readily remember the Noma when it comes to haute cuisine. Copenhagen’s highly sought-after three-Michelin-starred restaurant has been named the world’s best restaurant five times by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, and last year it became a hot topic again when it announced that it would close its doors at the end of 2024.

Finding a place to have lunch or dinner there has never been an easy task, and an experience there doesn’t cost less than R$4,000 per person.

What many people don’t know is that the chef Rene Redzepi the name behind the famous venture, opened, in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, another house completely different from its older brother, but with the quality standard that these important names carry.

O POPL works independently and is located on a busy corner in the neighborhood Christianshavn one of the busiest and best-known in Copenhagen. A few minutes walk from there is the city’s most famous landmark: the Nyhavn canal with its charming and iconic colorful little houses.

The POPL

Burger - POPL

The name POPL derives from the Latin word “populus,” meaning community of people. It also refers to poplar wood, a nod to the locals’ approach to and great love of nature.

During the day, in two shifts, it operates as a take-away burger joint. The order is placed directly at the cashier, paid for immediately, and delivered in a kraft paper bag, just like the typical fast food ones.

The little tables on the sidewalk in front of the POPL are for visitors to enjoy sandwiches with the perfect meat point, very crispy bread and accompanied by thicker and very dry fries.

There are only three sandwich options on the menu: the cheeseburger, which has red onion and cheddar (125 Danish kroner – around R$100); the vegetarian burger, made with quinoa, tempeh, lettuce and tomato (also 125 Danish kroner); and the kids burger, with ketchup and cheddar (110 Danish kroner – around R$87).

The customer can also opt for the combo, which includes a soft drink, fries and the burger of their choice. It costs 185 Danish kroner or 195 if the drink chosen is beer (around R$155). For dessert, the fixed suggestion is the homemade chocolate chip cookie (45 Danish kroner – around R$36).

At night, right next door, the hall of POPL opens its doors at 5 pm. It is a casual restaurant that, in addition to take-away burgers, offers other types of sandwiches (such as fish and shrimp) and dishes to share as side dishes. Prioritizing seasonal ingredients, they always have something new on the menu, which can be checked out at this link.

Its uncluttered ambience was designed by Danish architects Spacon & X, taking inspiration from Noma’s garden – where the original burger was first served.

There, diners will also find a variety of drinks, beers, and an organic wine list.

Noma will close its doors

Those who dream of visiting Noma need to hurry (and be lucky enough to get a table before the end of the year). Chef René Redzepi has announced that he will close the establishment in 2024. The idea is that from 2025 onwards it will operate as a “huge laboratory”, with work focused on food innovation and the development of new flavors.
