This Friday (8), the members of Sepultura announced the end of the most famous metal band in Brazil and a closing tour for 2024.
The band was formed almost 40 years ago, in 1984, in the home of brothers Max (vocalist and guitarist) and Igor Cavalera (drummer), in Belo Horizonte. Alongside the two were bassist Paulo Jr. and guitarist Jairo Guedez, in the band’s original lineup.
The announcement, this Friday, of the end of the metal group was made by Derrick Green (vocalist), Andreas Kisser (guitarist), Eloy Casagrande (drummer) and Paulo Jr. (who remains bassist and only member of the band’s first formation) .
International success
Still in its first decade of activity, the band put Brazil on the world heavy metal map, on tours across Europe and the United States (at a time when international trips were resolved by letters and phone calls, as there was no internet), and won sales and international audience marks well above the average for a Brazilian band.
Shortly after the release of the band’s first studio album — “Morbid Visions” (1986), Jairo Guedez left Sepultura and was replaced by Andreas Kisser.
In the 90s, the group released a sequence of critically acclaimed albums: “Beneath the Remains” (1989), “Arise” (1991), “Chaos AD” (1993) and “Roots” (1996).
In this last album, the band added Brazilian rhythms to metal, such as percussion and indigenous musical elements. One of the tracks was recorded during the band’s stay in a tribe of Xavante indigenous people, in Mato Grosso.
The departure of the Cavalera brothers
The year “Roots” was released also marked the farewell of Max Cavalera, who left the band after falling out with the other members of the group. It was then that North American Derrick Green took over the vocals for Sepultura.
In 2006, ten years after his brother left, Igor Cavalera also decided to leave the band. The Cavalera brothers today returned to playing together in the band called “Cavalera Conspiracy”.

In place of Igor on the drums, some names passed – such as Roy Mayorga and Jean Dolabella –, until Sepultura’s current drummer, Eloy Casagrande, definitively occupied the position since 2011.
In 2020, Sepultura released its 15th studio album, “Quadra”, with the same lineup that announced the end of the band this Friday.
Farewell tour
The “Celebrating Life Through Death” tour will start on March 1st, at Arena Hall, in Belo Horizonte.
The group will visit more than 40 countries in Europe and Latin America throughout the eighteen months of the tour, in the year in which it celebrates four decades of history.
Tickets go on sale on Monday (11).
The band is yet to release one last album recorded live with 40 tracks, some recorded during the final tour.
“We are at the best moment in the band’s history and we leave the scene in a very calm way”, explains guitarist Andreas Kisser during the announcement. “These are cycles that close and are renewed. We want to celebrate. I didn’t want Sepultura to end up with a fight or for us to get too old on stage.”
