A new series arrives simultaneously on Disney+ and Star+ in February: “Shogun: The Glorious Saga of Japan” . The first two episodes will be available on the 27th. There will be 10 chapters in total, which will be released weekly on Tuesdays.
The production is an adaptation of the novel by James Clavell, from 1975. The work is set in Japan, in the year 1600, a time of great navigation and the conquest of new worlds. The country was going through a civil war, which would define the century.
In the plot, warlord Yoshii Toranaga fights for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him when a mysterious European ship is found abandoned in a nearby fishing village.

- Hiroyuki Sanada

The veteran of Japanese cinema, who also has a successful career in Hollywood (“The Last Samurai”, “47 Ronin” and more), Hiroyuki Sanada plays Yoshii Toranaga, the protagonist of the plot.
He is a powerful “bushō” (warlord) of a feared lineage and lord of the extensive Kanto region. When the story begins, he is isolated and outnumbered by his enemies in Osaka Castle.

The American actor, who already has a history in period titles, such as “Lady Macbeth” (2016) and “Persuasion” (2022), plays John Blackthorne an English pilot, who has his ship stranded in the territory of Toranaga.

After starring in “Monarch – Legacy of Monsters” (2023), the New Zealand actress, raised in Japan, joins the cast of “Shogun: The Glorious Saga of Japan” .
In the plot, Anna Sawai gives life to Toda Mariko, an extremely faithful and determined woman, who has the trust of her lord, Toranaga.

The Japanese actor is the antagonist of the plot. He plays Ishido Kazunari, a former peasant turned all-powerful “bushō” (warlord), a member of the Osaka Castle Protector Council of Regents.
He will spare no effort to remove Toranaga from the Council and neutralize him as a threat to power.
The production also features:
- Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, a notorious traitor and close ally of Toranaga;
- Hiroto Kanai as Kashigi Omi, the young leader of the fishing village where Blackthorne's ship was found;
- Moeka Hoshi as Usami Fuji, a widow who must find new purpose amid her master's struggle;
- Tokuma Nishioka as Toda Hiromatsu, Toranaga's trusted general and closest friend;
- Shinnosuke Abe as Toda Hirokatsu (Buntaro), Mariko's jealous husband;
- Yuki Kura as Yoshii Nagakado, the impetuous son of Toranaga who has a strong desire to prove his worth;
- Yuka Kouri as Kiku, a courtesan known throughout Japan for her artistic talent;
- Fumi Nikaido as Ochiba no Kata, the revered mother of the heir who will stop at nothing to put an end to Toranaga and his threat to her son's power.
