Meet Xiaomi’s MIUI 13: what the biggest firmware update will be

Recently, many users have noted that the developers of MIUI firmware for Xiaomi smartphones seem to be marking time: MIUI 12 turned out to be not that much new, then MIUI 12.5 came out with new animations (roughly speaking, only with them), and then MIUI 12.5 only fixed bugs. Against the background of all this, the upcoming MIUI 13 shell seems to be the largest in recent years – the developers are already actively testing it, and screenshots and information about a future update are constantly appearing on the network.

💡 This article was written not only on the basis of official comments, but also on the basis of rumors and leaks from insiders, so the information should be treated with some degree of skepticism. However, only the most plausible data are mentioned here – very dubious insiders were bypassed.

Updated design

More jokes about MIUI and iOS similarities

In MIUI 13, developers are going to completely redesign the home screen, thanks in large part to widgets. At the end of August, the “supermoderator” of the official Xiaomi forum shared early sketches of what the widgets will be in the upcoming firmware update. Judging by the renders, the designers were clearly inspired by the implementation in iOS 14 – many ideas have obvious similarities.

Widgets will be available in several sizes, on the layouts you can see 2×2 and 4×2 cells. They can be freely placed on the desktop, but there will also be a separate shutter-panel for them (in iOS, it is located to the left of the main screen). Apparently, the widgets in the Xiaomi view will be needed more for displaying information than for interactivity (interacting with the application without having to launch it).

One of the screenshots leaked into the network shows a notification curtain with a widget inside that displays a summary of various data (the amount of traffic consumed, the account balance, the number of steps taken).

Enthusiasts have even posted a video demonstrating all the standard widgets in the App Vault.

Later screenshots of MIUI 13 also confirm the design of the widgets in MIUI 13, but also reveal a curious new detail: the search widget is now at the very bottom by default – most likely to make it easier to reach with your finger.

There is a high probability that Xiaomi will allow users to create their own super wallpapers – animated images that activate their effects when you unlock the screen and swipe the desktop. At least the developers have considered such a possibility – they officially announced this in September 2020.

New features

There will be really interesting innovations

The most sensational feature of MIUI 13, which Xiaomi has already begun to roll out for some smartphones even on MIUI 12.5, is memory extension… It is based on the paging file principle familiar to Windows users. Roughly speaking, the Memory Extension reserves up to 3 GB of storage and uses this amount as RAM.

In practice, this idea is really useful, but not ideal – physical RAM is much faster than storage-based virtual memory. This greatly affects the operation of applications that use extended RAM, so the firmware will only use the backup memory when absolutely necessary. Most likely, the Memory Extension option will not be available to all smartphones, but only to models with a fast storage (UFS 3.1 standard). The user will not be able to choose the amount of virtual memory – it will be fixed by the firmware and will be from 1 to 3 GB.

Also, MIUI 13 will receive several major improvements at once regarding the user’s interaction with the smartphone. For example, the system Natural Touch 2.0 will use new tactile cues to create more realistic touch effects. Option Gesture Turbo 2.0 should improve the smoothness of gestures and thereby increase the speed of the firmware.

In one of the leaked screenshots, there is a noticeable mention of the small windows feature – however it is not clear what it is. Most likely, this updated option will allow you to launch applications (all or specific) in a miniature floating window that is displayed on top of other programs. This can be useful for applications like a calculator or calendar.

When will MIUI 13 come out

Will have to wait. Even the details

At the end of August 2021, the general manager of the Indonesian division of Xiaomi Alvin Tse reported on Twitter that this year is set aside for MIUI 12.5 – the release of the next major update there is no need to wait in 2021… However, in early August, the head of Xiaomi Lei Jun announced that MIUI 13 will be released at the end of 2021.

Probably, both leaders are right, they just talk about different things. Apparently, at the end of 2021, Xiaomi will announce the MIUI 13 firmware, and its stable version will certainly not be released until 2022 – most likely in the second or third quarter.
