Meet Yoda, the 4-year-old dog who captured Brazilian fugitive in the USA

Moments after law enforcement authorities spotted the head of convicted killer Danilo Cavalcante, 34, peering through some undergrowth, they released a police dog that bit him and detained him, leading to his arrest nearly two weeks after he escaped from prison, officials said.

The dog, a 4-year-old male Belgian Malinois named Yoda, belonged to one of two tactical teams that moved to capture Cavalcante on Wednesday in a wooded area of Pennsylvania, ending a hunt that attracted hundreds of police officers at the scene, with no shots fired during the arrest.

Yoda was a significant force in the capture, preventing Cavalcante from using a stolen rifle that was within his reach, State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said during a press conference Wednesday.

“He was essential as far as tracking and searching, as were several other K-9s that were here,” Robert Clark, supervising deputy U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, told CNN on Wednesday. “All of these K-9s were used by different tactical teams in the area and were just incredible assets.”

Cavalcante escaped from the Chester County Jail on August 31, leaving the population gripped by fear, having been spotted numerous times.

The 34-year-old was convicted last month of the 2021 murder of his ex-girlfriend, Deborah Brandão. He is also wanted in a 2017 homicide case in Brazil.

Cavalcante was captured in Chester County, surrounded by at least 20 police officers, Bivens said. Yoda joined the search from the U.S. Border Patrol Tactical Unit stationed in Michigan, Clark told CNN .

Authorities say it took about five minutes from when authorities began to intervene to arrest Cavalcante, with Yoda’s help.
