The meeting between Ukrainian and Russian authorities and the speech at the UN General Assembly by the ambassador of Brazil are among the highlights of the night of this Monday, February 28, 2022.

Meeting ends without progress

The meeting between Ukrainian and Russian officials to discuss a possible ceasefire ended with no progress. The meeting took place on the border of Belarus, a Russian ally. Delegations will return to their respective countries before a further attempt at discussion.

Brazil in favor of sanction against Russia

In a speech at the UN General Assembly, the ambassador of Brazil, Ronaldo Costa Filho, reinforced that the country voted in favor of sanctioning Russia in the United Nations Security Council, and said that he still believes that nations can contribute to a diplomatic negotiation for the conflict.

Shell ends partnership with Russia

In response to the invasion of Ukraine, fuel company Shell said it would end partnerships with Russian state energy company Gazpron. The company also announced that it will end its involvement in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.

Airbnb offers accommodation to refugees

Airbnb – the vacation rental company – will offer free and temporary accommodation for up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees. The company has sent letters to leaders in Poland, Romania, Germany and Hungary offering to help shelter the Ukrainians heading to these countries.

Russia out of the Cup

FIFA and UEFA have announced Russia’s suspension from all competitions. With the decision, Russia no longer has a chance to play in the 2022 World Cup. The team was not classified yet, but was playing in the playoffs of the Qualifiers.
