Meeting between Russia and Ukraine ends with no prospect of ceasefire

The first bilateral meeting between Russia and Ukraine since the first weeks of the war between the two countries had modest results.

The conversation on Friday (16) lasted just over two hours.

Both sides have confirmed that they intend to articulate a new meeting to discuss the end of the conflict. Ukraine has asked the next meeting to be between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.

Kremlin said it will analyze the demand, but has not committed to a agenda between heads of state.

Russia and Ukraine still agreed to exchange a thousand prisoners of war on each side.

A source that accompanied the meeting said Russia made demands considered “unacceptable” by Kiev, such as the control of regions that the Kremlin army is not even currently occupied.

The Ukrainian President was in a forum in Albania during the negotiations, alongside the UK leaders, France, Germany and Poland. At the end of the meeting, Zelensky called US President Donald Trump and asked the West to expand sanctions against Russia as a way to press Putin to negotiate a ceasefire.

Then Trump again conditioned any agreement to a meeting between him and the Kremlin head.

“We need to meet. He (Putin) and I will find ourselves. I think we’ll solve the problem. Or maybe not, but at least we’ll know. And if we don’t solve, that would be interesting?” Said Donald Trump.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said on Friday that the bloc prepares a new round of restrictions on the Russian economy.

Among them, ties to the financial sector and Russian oil.

“We are ready to do more to bring Putin to the negotiating table. This war must end,” said the European manager.
