Meeting in Egypt is “relevant effort”, but there is low expectation of a solution to the war, sources say

At the invitation of Egypt, Brazil confirmed its presence at the international summit that will discuss the conflict between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas next Saturday (21) in Cairo, the Egyptian capital.

Diplomatic sources highlight that the event is a “relevant effort” by the Egyptian government. However, they admit that expectations that a solution will emerge from this meeting are not high given the complexity of the conflict.

The event was called amid the escalation of the conflict. The effort is in an attempt to prevent the fighting from spreading to the Middle East. In addition to Brazil and Egypt, Iraq, Turkey and Qatar are also expected to participate.

The convening of the summit also comes amid pressure on Egypt to open the Rafah crossing, allowing foreigners to leave the Gaza Strip through its territory and the creation of humanitarian corridors.

There is a fear among the Egyptian authorities of losing control at the border, which could provide an opening for terrorists to enter and also increase the number of refugees in the country.

Egypt’s invitation was made directly to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), however, as he is recovering from surgery, he will send a representative. The delegation that will go to Cairo has not yet been defined. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, informed that he will not be able to attend. In an interview in the Senate, he informed that a representative from Brazil will be sent.

Egypt is an important regional actor with the capacity to dialogue with everyone, Arab countries, Israel, other countries in the region and with the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.

According to members of the Lula government, Brazil, by participating in meetings like this one in Cairo, would be reaffirming its credentials as a relevant country in the world and its tradition of “balanced and active diplomacy, also capable of dialoguing with all parties”.
