Meeting Lavrov with his Afghan counterpart – At “table” economic cooperation and fighting terrorism

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today had a telephone conversation with the Foreign Minister of the Afghan Taliban government Amir Han Mutaki, with whom he discussed a range of issues, including financial cooperation and the fight against terrorism. Russia became the first country this month to recognize the Afghan Taliban government that occupied power in August 2021 as US -led forces led a chaotic departure from the country. The Russian Foreign Ministry’s announcement states that Lavrov and Mutaki “emphasized their mutual interest in growing cooperation between the two countries in the fields of trade, the economy and the humanitarian sector and for the enhanced regional security, including fight against terrorism”.
