Meeting of K. Skreka with members of the US Congress and J. Payat

The Minister of Environment and Energy, Costas Skrekas, met on Tuesday afternoon with the members of the Energy and Trade Committee of the US House of Representatives, Frank Pallone Jr., Fred Upton, Yvette D. Clarke, Jerry McNerney, Robert E. Latta, Lisa Blunt Rochester and Lizzie Fletcher and the US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt. The Secretary General of Energy and Mineral Raw Materials, Alexandra Sdoukou, also participated in the meeting.

During the meeting, the new data formed by the illegal invasion of Russia in Ukraine in the world economy and international energy markets were discussed, as well as the measures taken by the Government to compensate for the effects of the large price increases on energy costs. .

The Greek Minister informed the members of the Congress and the American Ambassador about the complete plan that has been prepared with the aim of the energy adequacy of the country, in case of interruption of the gas supply from Russia. He mentioned, among other things, the increase of the capacity of the LNG station in Revythousa and the implementation of infrastructures of strategic importance for the energy security of the country, such as the new gas stations in Alexandroupolis and Corinth, the IGB gas pipeline and the interconnections with electricity. Egypt, Cyprus and Israel.

Mr. Skrekas also presented the ambitious plans for the country’s energy transition. He stressed that by 2030 the national strategic goal envisages the coverage of 70% of the domestic consumption of electricity by RES. As he underlined, by the end of the decade the installed capacity of RES units will exceed 20 GW and for this reason the development of electricity storage stations with a capacity of at least 3 GW is planned. He made special reference to important programs that will make a decisive contribution to the achievement of national goals, such as the energy upgrade of the country’s building stock, the promotion of electricity and the carbonization of the islands, through the Gr-Eco Islands initiative. The Greek Minister also referred to the targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions included in the first National Climate Law which will be submitted to Parliament in the coming days.

The Minister of Environment and Energy expressed his belief that Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and its impact on energy prices will accelerate the green transition, due to the need for Europe to become independent of Russian hydrocarbons and lower energy costs produced by RES.
