President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) heard from party leaders gathered for the first time at the Political Council of the Coalition, held this Wednesday (8) at the Planalto Palace, chorus of the criticisms he has made of the Central Bank’s interest rate policy , commanded by Roberto Campos Neto.
According to reports from participants at the meeting, at least a dozen speeches had the current level of the Selic rate as their motto – the rejection was unanimous. The criticisms were not exclusive to the parties that were part of the coalition that elected Lula and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) in October.
Members of the center parties were also critical of the policy of maintaining high interest rates, even with inflation at lower levels than at the height of the price hike.
“You won the election, and Avenida Faria Lima is in charge of the Central Bank?”, said the president of Solidariedade, Paulo Pereira da Silva, one of the strongest voices, but not the only one, against the current level of the rate at the meeting. of interest.
Even members of central acronyms, such as the PSD, made critical statements about the BC’s monetary policy. After the meeting, in an interview with CNN the leader of the government in Congress, Senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), agreed with the critical stance of Lula and the participants in the meeting and defended Campos Neto’s trip to Congress, as has been considered by government allies.
“We want to debate with society about the highest interest rate on the planet. We have 13.75% with inflation of 5% to 6%. Turkey has inflation above 50% and an interest rate of 9% per year. There is something very wrong,” said Randolfe.
In a press conference in Brasilia, the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, said that the government has not encouraged the calling of Campos Neto to Congress or changes in the law that guarantees autonomy to the Central Bank.
“There is no discussion within the government about changing the Central Bank law. There is a desire for what is in the BC’s objectives to be increasingly pursued by all”, he said, referring to the level of employment in the economy, the stability and efficiency of the financial system, among others.
