Meeting of the Speaker of Parliament K. Tassoulas with the new US Ambassador to Greece

Turkey’s challenges and threats must end, said Parliament Speaker K. Tassoulas during his meeting with the new US Ambassador to Athens, George Tsouni, whom he welcomed to the Greek Parliament.

According to a relevant announcement of the Parliament, Mr. Tassoulas referred to the constant challenges – “although the word challenges is euphemism, I would say threats”, as he characteristically stressed – that Greece accepts from neighboring Turkey. “We are facing a major crisis with Russia’s barbaric invasion of Ukraine and a NATO member country, such as neighboring Turkey, has no right to create or attempt to create a crisis within the crisis,” Tassoulas said. He added: “We must all be firm and strict in this and let our neighbors realize that these kinds of challenges and threats must finally come to an end.”

Commenting on the Russian aggression, he stressed that “our role is no longer to fight, as Putin’s Russia is forcing us to do. . According to the same announcement, the Speaker of the Parliament noted that “in these challenges, in these ambitions, in these perspectives I am sure that we will return soon, facing the Russian aggression and setting it aside thanks to the unity of free spaces, thanks to unity of the western world, part of which, sovereign, is the country you represent but also part of which, faithful, worthy and stable, is also my country “.

According to the announcement of the Parliament, for his part, the US Ambassador referred to the “particularly warm relationship” of Greece with the United States, as well as to the “historic” speech of the Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the Congress. Mr. Tsounis invited Mr. Tassoulas to visit his special homeland, in mountainous Nafpaktia and expressed the desire to visit Ioannina as well.

The Speaker of Parliament presented to the US Ambassador a collectible commemorative medal of the Bank of Greece concerning the territorial expansions of the country during the Balkan wars ΄12-13. “It is the expansion that took place in the region of Epirus, which shows the determination of Greece but also the need to live peacefully in the modern world and to deal with its prosperity and the well-being of its inhabitants”, as noted by Mr. Tassoulas .

He also gave Mr. Tsounis the great edition of the Greek Parliament entitled “The Greeks in the Diaspora. 15th-21st century”, because “you are a child of the Diaspora”, as Mr. Tassoulas said to Mr. Tsounis, in which edition is included the whole cartography of the Diaspora of Hellenism.

Immediately after the meeting, the Speaker of Parliament guided the US Ambassador to the Exhibition “Facing Freedom! In the Greek Parliament two centuries later”, as well as in other areas of Parliament.

The meeting was also attended by the diplomatic advisor of the Parliament, Ambassador Mr. Konstantinos Economidis.
