The governor of Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes (União Brasil), classified the meeting held at the Palácio do Planalto to discuss the fires affecting several regions of Brazil as “very positive”.
In an exclusive interview with CNN 360° Mendes highlighted the “frank dialogue” established with the federal government about the reality faced by the states.
The meeting, initially scheduled to be attended by President Lula, was chaired by the Chief of Staff, Rui Costa. Nine governors and two deputy governors participated in the meeting to discuss the environmental crisis affecting the country.
Climatic factors and criminal action
Mendes pointed out that, in addition to the drought affecting a large part of Brazilian territory, there was a significant increase in fire outbreaks of criminal origin.
“Many people, on purpose, set fires in many regions of the country, creating an environment with climate, wind and high temperatures that led to us experiencing true environmental chaos,” said the governor.
The governor of Mato Grosso stressed that the situation is beginning to come to an end, with the start of rains in some regions. However, he emphasized the need for advance planning to avoid similar problems in the future.
Planning and stricter legislation
“The meeting has a high point, which is that we plan well in advance so that next year we have better infrastructure and better coordination of actions,” said Mendes.
He also highlighted the importance of creating legislation that can “harshly punish these criminals who commit this type of crime against the environment, health and the Brazilian economy.”
The meeting at the Planalto Palace demonstrates the concern of the federal government and the states in seeking joint solutions to combat fires and prevent future environmental disasters.
Cooperation between different levels of government will be essential to implement effective measures to prevent and combat forest fires.
