The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, classified as “a good lunch”, the meeting he had this Thursday (16) with the President of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and with the Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet. The minister’s speech took place this Friday morning (17), at the Ministry of Finance.
The lunch between the three authorities took place hours before the meeting of the National Monetary Council (CMN), and lasted about two hours. The Board meeting lasted about 28 minutes.
The CMN is the government body responsible for formulating currency and credit policy, such as the country’s inflation targets. The Council comprises the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Planning, and the President of the Central Bank.
“It was a good lunch, a good first approximation with Simone’s presence. We had a long two-hour chat,” Haddad said. Asked whether they discussed changes in inflation targets, the minister said they discussed “aligning fiscal and monetary policy”.
The meeting took place amid friction between the federal government and the Central Bank, with President Lula criticizing the monetary policy and the current interest rate in the country, which is 13.75% per year.
