Meeting with pre-candidate for mayor of Araruama ends after shooting in RJ

A meeting with the pre-candidate for mayor of Araruama, a city in the interior of Rio de Janeiro, and city councilor, Penha Bernardes (PL), ended after a shooting on the night of this Wednesday (10).

In a video recorded and posted on social media, she claims that armed men on motorcycles shot near the place where about 400 people were gathered. The mayor of Saquarema, Manoela Peres, was also participating in the meeting that was taking place in the Areal neighborhood, in Araruama, in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro.

“They fired more than ten shots into the air and asked us to stop at any cost,” he said.

She also added that everyone was trapped in the living room. Among the victims were many elderly people and children.

“What have we come to? I had to stop a meeting now, because of this dirty politics,” Penha Bernardes said on social media.

“Until when, my God? So many elderly people and children at the meeting, this is unacceptable,” said the candidate, adding that “not even these shots will stop me.”

At least two cars were left with bullet holes.

In another video that was being recorded at the time of the meeting, it is possible to hear gunshots outside the house.

The case was registered at the 118th DP in Araruama. Despite the fear and shock, no one was injured.
