Mega Millions: single bet wins prize of R$ 7 billion in US lottery

In the United States, a single bet won over R$7 billion (US$1.35 billion) in the American Mega Millions lottery.

This is the second largest award in the country’s history. The first was $1.53 billion, paid in 2018 to a South Carolina State winner.

The amount had been accumulated since October last year. There were 25 rounds until a player from the state of Maine chose the winning numbers. The winning ticket was sold at Hometown Gas & Grill in Lebanon.

Unlike the Brazilian lottery, the American winner has the option to choose whether the prize will be paid in a single installment or in installments. Tax collection also depends on each state.

“Congratulations to the Maine State Lottery, who just won their first Mega Millions jackpot,” Mega Millions Consortium Director Pat McDonald said in a statement. “It’s the fourth billion-dollar jackpot in Mega Millions history.”

The prize for the next draw, scheduled for Tuesday (17), is estimated at US$ 20 million.
