Mega-operation in Rio communities has no end date, governor tells CNN

In an interview with CNN the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro (PL-RJ) said that the mega-operation carried out in 10 communities in Rio has no end date.

“It is an integrated and completely live action, coordinated directly by the Secretary of Public Security. There is no end date until intelligence understands that the result has been achieved,” he explained.

Castro also stated that three people have already been arrested in the action launched on Monday morning (15).

The governor explained that the action has two main fronts: combating territorial occupation and money laundering.

According to the executive, the initiative involves closing companies linked to illegality, complying with court orders and increasing visible policing in the regions.

Investigations indicate that ice factories, bakeries and construction companies are linked to drug trafficking and the militia.

During today’s operation, an ice factory in Cidade de Deus was fined for soil and water pollution, as well as water theft. The inspection was carried out by DPMA, SEAS and INEA. According to the state government, the establishment will be closed.

“It is an action planned for more than 30 days to end this war declared by two large factions and the increase in criminal activity. The territorial dispute is a question of money, almost a business of the crime,” he said.

He further explained that the operation began today because of the school holidays, so as not to harm children on school days.
