The number of deaths rose to six in the mega-operation carried out this Friday (24) in the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the North of Rio. The action of the Civil and Military police aimed to arrest criminals involved in theft of vehicles and cargo .
One of the victims was Geraldo Carlos dos Reis, aged 67, resident of Complexo do Alemão. THE CNN the family said that the retiree was shot at home after helping the dog, which was shot in the paw.
“He helped the dog and called my brother to tell him what had happened. After that, we were no longer able to contact him,” said Rose Andrade, the victim’s daughter.
The elderly man’s body was removed by family members hours later, when the shooting ended. Geraldo Carlos leaves four children.
Victims killed on their way to work
Antônio Júlio Claudio, 53 years old, also died from a stray bullet. According to the family, the general services assistant left his home, in the Nova Brasília community, and was heading to work when he was shot. His body was removed by relatives at the end of the exchange of gunfire.
“Every time they (police officers) enter, an innocent person dies, and it wasn’t just one. My brother was a worker and was taken out of the favela in a sheet, as if his life was worthless”, lamented Marlene Aparecida, the victim’s sister.
In addition to her brother, Marlene also lost her cousin in the same operation. According to the seamstress, Carlos was at home and was shot in the chest. She says that the bullet killed her pet dog and then hit the elderly man, who was sitting on the sofa.
Gardener Carlos André Vasconcelos da Silva, 35 years old, was another victim of the confrontation. The case occurred near the Penha BRT station in Rio de Janeiro, in the North Zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. He was shot in the back while on his way to work.
“He lives here, but he is from Rocinha. I left every day at 4am and worked from Monday to Friday. We live in a community and we are afraid, right? But you never think that this will happen to us”, said the victim’s wife.
This Saturday morning (25/01), the family of Ryan de Souza, aged 21, went to the IML, in the center of Rio, for the legal procedures to release the body.
The mother claims that Ryan was a candy salesman and died after being shot in the leg. Relatives say they were prevented from going up to help him.
“He was still alive, but the police prevented me from going up to where he was. Then the body stayed there all day, and my son died”, lamented diarist Glauciene Muniz de Oliveira.
The sixth person killed in the action was a 16-year-old teenager. According to police, the minor was involved in drug trafficking.
Police officer remains hospitalized in serious condition
In addition to the six deaths, at least five people were injured in the action. Among them, Diogo Jordão, police officer from the PM’s Shock Battalion. The agent was shot in the head and, according to Getúlio Vargas Hospital, remains hospitalized in serious condition.
According to the unit, Wander dos Santos remains hospitalized and his health condition is stable.
Patients Anna Luiza Barbosa Roupa, Natalícia da Cunha and Isnaia de Souza were treated at HEGV and were discharged on Friday (24/01).
In a statement, the Rio de Janeiro Military Police states that fully collaborates with Civil Police investigations, in addition to instituting investigative procedures on people helped by popular during Security Forces action in Complexos do Alemão and Penha.
During the operation, police seized almost 1 ton of drugs, weapons and a grenade. Police also closed a marijuana greenhouse and a vehicle dismantling shop.
