Meghan Markle has lost her chance to become a British citizen

Meghan Markle has officially lost her chance to become a citizen of the United Kingdom… at least for now. To reveal it is the Daily Mail: the former American actress planned to become (also) English after marrying Prince Harry in May 2018. But to do so she had to stay in the UK for at least three years before applying for citizenship and legally obtaining UK passport requirements. Things, we know, have gone differently.

Law and Harry they left London at the end of 2019, to then return only in March 2020 for a short visit.

In the middle, the Sussexes unexpectedly announced Mexgit: that is, the decision to want to live away from the royal family. They have lived in California ever since.

In 2018, however, Kensington Palace had confirmed theat Meghan’s will to submit the application to obtain citizenship. Under the strict rules of the Ministry of the Interior, the Duchess, who first moved to London on 21 November 2017, could have started her application three years later, i.e. on November 21, 2020. But to do this, he had to limit the total days outside the UK a 270. This was not the case.

Meghan and Harry have not returned to London since March 2020. Their firstborn Archie, almost two years, even from November 2019. The Duchess does not seem, however, repentant. In California, she and Harry created the Archewell Charity Foundation, signed a $ 150 million contract with Netflix and an equally profitable one with Spotify, where they have debuted as a podcaster. More, Meghan started out as an entrepreneur, investing in a female and solidarity startup.

And in 2021 “we will see them in public much more than before”. But “not in the roles that royal status forced them to”.
