Former finance minister Henrique Meirelles defended this Tuesday (15) that the president-elect, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, support the name of Ilan Goldfajn in the presidency of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
“Ilan’s name was widely accepted by Latin American countries in general, and I think it would be a great addition to Brazil. I support the idea that the new government should support Ilan, who is an excellent name, and not enter into a question of party affiliation of ‘let’s choose’. It is a name that would represent Brazil very well in the Lula government”, he said when asked by journalists at an event for businessmen in New York.
The IDB accepted this week the Brazilian government’s nomination of Goldfajn as a candidate for the institution’s presidency, despite a request by Guido Mantega, former finance minister, for the name not to be accepted. By means of a letter, Mantega also requested the postponement of the election, scheduled for November 20, but the date has been maintained.
“There is no doubt that the name has to be proposed by the current government, because it is not possible to wait for the new government to take office to nominate it, and the normal procedure of the bank is that the governments, inter-regardless of how long they will be in charge, must make this decision. recommendation”
