Former first lady Melania Trump issued her first public response since her husband, former President Donald Trump, was injured in a shooting at one of his rallies on Saturday (13), reflecting on what the incident means to her and her family and calling for the country to “rise above hate.”
“I am thinking of you now, my fellow Americans. We have always been a unique union. America, the fabric of our gentle nation is in tatters, but our courage and common sense must rise and unite us once again as one,” she wrote.
“When I saw that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized that my life and Barron’s life were on the brink of a devastating change,” she wrote in a statement Sunday. “I am grateful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers who risked their own lives to protect my husband.”
Trump expressed condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the shooting and called the shooter a “monster” as he spoke fondly of her husband.
“A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine tried to erase Donald’s passion — his laughter, ingenuity, love of music, and inspiration,” she wrote.

The former first lady added that “the most important facets of my husband’s life — his human side — have been buried under the political machine. Donald, the generous and caring man who stood by me through the best and worst of times.”
Trump called on the country to tone down aggressive rhetoric and promote unity, and implored voters to consider the personal side and loved ones of politicians in the future.
“This morning, rise above the hatred, the vitriol, and the simplistic ideas that fuel violence,” she wrote.
