Melinda Gates and MacKenzie Scott, 40 million to support women

Forty million dollars to support and expand women’s power and influence in the United States by 2030. It was donated by Melinda French Gates and MacKenzie Scott (Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife), who launched the ‘Equality Can’t Wait Challenge, a ideas Contest to achieve their goal. Now Gates’ investment firm, Pivotal Ventures, has announced the four winners (out of 500 proposals submitted), each of which will receive a prize of 10 million dollars to continue their work.

An additional funding of 4 million dollars was assigned to two other proposals: one to provide support for survivors of partner violence and a training program for women who want to engage more in politics.

«The overwhelming response to the competition proves that there is no shortage of ideas on how to accelerate progress for women and the girls, ”Melinda French Gates said in a statement. “The winners are trained teams, working at the forefront and from within communities to help women in their lives and careers,” MacKenzie Scott added in her statement. “And above all, they are not alone. This challenge has attracted so many bold ideas for activate new recruits, remove old barriers and increase gender equality».

For example, changing attitudes towards caregiving and mobilizing public demand for paid family leave and flexible care. Or ensure women have more equal access to capital, business development resources and career opportunities. The diversified goals of the winning groups reflects the parameters of the Equality Can’t Wait Challenge, who sought ideas to create real change for women in at least one of the following areas: wages and wealth, unpaid care activities, leadership roles, cultural and intellectual content created by women, and public perception.

L’Equality Can’t Wait Challenge is officially over, but to continue the work for gender equality, a new website, Equality Can’t Wait Challenge Idea Lab, has been launched to help the best projects gain further support and collaboration.
