Memorandum of Cooperation between Greece and Albania for the protection and promotion of monuments and archeological sites

Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of archeological works, excavations, conservation, restoration of archeological sites and monuments in Albania, museology and museography, signed by the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Hellenic Republic Lina Mendoni, and the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Albania . The co-operation was sealed during Culture Minister Lina Mendoni’s official visit to Tirana for the start of the Greek Cultural Events Week organized by the Albanian capital as part of the European Youth Capital.

The Memorandum of Understanding reaffirms the commitment of the two parties to cooperate in the design and implementation of joint archaeological research and works, excavations, restoration works, conservation and promotion of archaeological sites in Albania. It also includes cooperation in educational activities, but also the transfer of know-how and documentation. In the framework of the Memorandum, a first pilot archeological program begins, in which the Ministry of Culture and Sports will be represented by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ioannina.

Immediately after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the Minister of Culture of Greece, Lina Mendoni, stated: “Cultural relations between European countries are more than ever necessary, as culture promotes timeless and universal values ​​that provide solutions to difficult situations. Greece and Albania have the potential to develop future cooperation in many areas, as the two peoples have developed close contacts and cooperation.The two countries have a great cultural heritage.With the Memorandum we have just signed, we are creating an umbrella of cooperation between the Ministries of Culture On the other hand, the Cultural Weeks initiative strengthens these ties and creates the conditions for the cultural organizations of Greece and Albania to get to know each other better, to work more closely and autonomously. concern young people and children, we give emphasis on relevant educational and digital programs and actions “.

The Minister of Culture of Albania, Elva Margariti, stated: “Today’s signing is an initiative to promote friendly cooperation between the two Ministries. This is an agreement that should have been signed years ago and includes all the issues we have discussed with the opportunity to other meetings with the Minister of Culture of Greece.What we have emphasized is the best approach in the field of digitization and educational programs.International Culture Weeks are a challenge for discussions with other countries here in Albania. we will continue the cultural events next year, emphasizing the children’s cultural events “.

Earlier in the talks, the two sides reaffirmed their mutual willingness to promote closer co-operation at the level of cross-border programs, as well as cultural programs for children and youth. The Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni thanked her counterpart for the invitation to pay an official visit to Albania and invited her to visit Athens as well. Lina Mendoni’s talks with the Minister of Culture of Albania Elva Margariti were also attended by the Deputy Minister of Culture Meri Kumbe.
