Memorial in honor of Covid-19 victims opens on Avenida Paulista

The Association of Victims and Relatives of Victims of Covid-19 (Avico) inaugurated this Sunday (23) a memorial in honor of the nearly 700,000 people killed by the coronavirus in Brazil.

The panel measuring about 20 meters was installed on Avenida Paulista, close to the CNN Brazil in São Paulo, and was attended by family and friends who joined in leaving messages, flowers and prayers.

The association was founded by lawyer Gustavo Bernardes and social worker Paola Falceta in April 2021, in the city of Porto Alegre. Both were infected by the virus. Bernardes was intubated in 2020 and Falceta lost his mother due to complications from Covid.

“The memorial in honor of the victims of Covid-19 on Av. Paulista today was marked by many hugs, tears, solidarity, empathy, resistance, revolt with the intentional and systematic attacks of the federal management against the health of the population, boycott until today the vaccination (examples of children under 6 months), and the denial of our existence!” wrote Avico on his official Instagram account.

“Even though we are legally constituted (with CNPJ), we are not a company or law firm, we do not have headquarters or employees. We are all workers who, at the same time, offer their support and knowledge in solidarity and collectively to others like us”, say the founders of the association.

“We decided not to stand by and watch the Brazilian State contributing to the illness and death of our people by Covid-19.”

Nearly 2,000 family members of Covid-19 victims and survivors in 24 states contribute to Avico, in addition to partnerships with other groups.

Data from the state health departments collected via a consortium of press vehicles point to a moving average of 69 deaths in the last 7 days, a variation of -5% compared to the last 7 days.

In Brazil, confirmed cases total 34,830,752.
