Men and women: how many hours should you sleep?

There’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep. But a good night’s sleep can mean different things to different people. According to science, women need more sleep than men. Maybe Dakota Johnson wasn’t so absurd after all when she said she needed 10 hours a night to “function.”

When it comes to sleep hygiene, most of us believe that the universal standard is something close to eight hours. However, studies have shown that this is not entirely true. There are people who need to stay asleep for a different amount of time in order to function at their best.

We spoke to Dr Aileen Alexander, a former GP, women’s health and sleep expert and founder of Nourishto find out if women really need more sleep than men.

Do women need more sleep than men?

Different Education Scientists have looked at our sleep habits by gender and found that women, on average, sleep 6 to 28 minutes more than men. However, Alexander emphasizes that “research in this field is limited.”

There are several theories about Why women tend to sleep a few minutes longer (on average) than their male counterparts. Since sleep is regulated by hormones, our gender may have an influence on how much we need.

“When it comes to physiology, women’s hormones play a huge role in sleep,” explains the expert, “and this includes everything from menstrual periods to pregnancy and menopause. All of these scenarios can have a negative impact on sleep for obvious reasons. In general, it is suggested that women have a greater need for sleep and are more likely to take daytime naps.”
Women are also more prone to insomnia, which may explain why, when they doze off, they end up needing a little more sleep.

Then there’s the question of what we do during the day: are women simply a little more tired than men? “Women are typically the ones who get up during the night to support children or, in some cases, elderly parents,” Alexander says. Although studies show that women technically need an average of 11 minutes longer, Alexander believes more research is needed: “In my professional opinion, we need more scientific evidence to support this claim,” she explains. In reality, there is no exact amount of time that we all need.
“Sleep needs are different for everyone and must be individualized and not just stereotyped based on gender,” says the specialist.

Ultimately, the important thing is to listen to your body, because, ultimately, each of us is different. «The recommended amount of sleep for every adult is 8 hours, but there are those who manage to sleep well with 7 hours and those who need 9», says Alexander, who adds: «I always recommend listening to your body. If you don’t feel rested in the morning, it’s a good idea to start improving the quality of your sleep.”

What are the consequences of insufficient sleep?

If you’re worried about not getting enough sleep every night – whether you’re a man or a woman – it’s important to pay attention to the signals your body is giving you.
“Although more research is needed to understand the gender gap between the sleep needs and cycles of men and women, the consequences of insufficient sleep are well highlighted and can have a huge impact on both men and women,” explains Alexander. “Lack of sleep affects our reaction times, which can lead to car accidents and mistakes at work. It has a profound impact on mood and increases the risk of medical conditions such as anxiety and depression. It can also lead to health problems: Lack of sleep is closely linked to obesity, diabetes, heart conditions, hormonal imbalances, impaired immune function and more.”

Alexander adds that sleep is the “pillar” of health: “Sleep is the time when we repair our bodies, consolidate our memories and recharge,” he says. “Not only does it help us prevent diseases, but it also makes us feel energetic and happy.”
