Men must be part of the solution against violence against women, says expert

The creator of “Papo de Homem”, Guilherme Valadares, believes that men are part of the problem of violence against women and “need to be part of the solution.”

It acts to open dialogue in companies and groups precisely on this topic.

December 6th marked the National Day of Mobilization of Men to End Violence against Women.

“The conversation cannot be just for women, men have to assume responsibility, and this is not easy, nor trivial”, he said, in an interview with CNN Radio on CNN in the Plural.

In his work, Guilherme states that the first statement he usually hears from men is denial.

“I always hear ‘I don’t do that’, but there’s usually no self-examination of what he’s done or lived in his life,” he said.

The specialist brought up the reflection that not all men are familiar with the different types of violence against women.

“There is moral, sexual, psychological, physical, patrimonial, they have the idea of an extreme case and think ‘I never threw a punch’, but they already squeezed, threw it on the ground, punched the wall…”, he said.

For this reason, he believes that a good first step is to “increase these men’s repertoire”: “Many agree on putting an end to machismo, but the act of offering respect comes up against a lack of knowledge.”

“You need to start from the basics: be dark and believe in women, so as not to have denial and disqualification”, he added.
