The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Robert Menendez, listed the strict conditions under which he could withdraw his objections to the acquisition of F-16 fighters from Turkey. Explaining his position to APE-MPE and the Hellas Journal website, the US senator said: “I was very clear about the sale of F-16s to Turkey. We sell our military equipment based on some standards, with those who share the values us, and not just on the basis of financial gain”.
Senator Menendez is considered to be the man who holds the keys to the F-16s, since as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee he has the right to veto the sale of US weapons systems. In this light, the senator listed a number of problems in which Ankara should change its behavior and attitude. These include:
· The issue of the acquisition of the Russian S-400 system.
· Overflights over the Greek islands.
· Turkey’s close relations with Russia.
· Human rights violations, including the imprisonment of journalists and lawyers.
While acknowledging that the list of open issues is long, Senator Menendez argued that these outstanding issues must be addressed in order to achieve the sale and upgrade of the F-16 fighters. “If someone is willing to deal with these issues, then there is a possibility, but so far I have not seen any willingness from President Erdogan to take these steps,” the senator noted.
