A Canadian judge has released Meng Wangzhou, chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. terminating its extradition proceedings in the US, following a brief hearing yesterday Friday in a British Columbia court.
The hearing in Vancouver, attended by Ms. Meng, ended a few hours after an agreement was reached between Washington and Huawei that allows the CEO and daughter of the founder, who has been under house arrest in Canada since late 2018, to returned to China.
Meng Wangzhou was arrested on December 1, 2018 at Vancouver International Airport at the request of Washington, as the US Department of Justice wanted to bring her to trial for “bank fraud”, among other things.
The case has sparked a major crisis in diplomatic relations between Canada and China.
The Canadian Ministry of Justice clarified that Ms. Meng is free to return to her homeland, something she has already done after leaving for her country.
The 49-year-old daughter of the founder of the giant Chinese telecommunications company, boarded a plane bound for Shenzhen shortly after her release yesterday by the Canadian authorities under the terms of the agreement that ended the three-year judicial and diplomatic series involving Beijing, Washington and Ottawa. Her departure was recorded by the cameras of Canadian television networks.

“About 12 minutes ago, the plane carrying Michael Covring and Michael Speivor left Chinese airspace and was on a flight to Canada,” Trinto told an emergency news conference.
