Mercadona donated more than 17,000 tons of food in 2020

Mercadona has donated more than 17,000 tons of products in 2020 to soup kitchens, food banks and other charities of Spain and Portugal, 84% more than the previous year, as a consequence of the current health and economic crisis derived from coronavirus.

These donations are the equivalent of more than 283,000 shopping carts and are made through collaboration with more than 290 soup kitchens, more than 60 food banks and other social entities and charities from both Spain as of the areas of Portugal where Mercadona is present, explains the supermarket chain in a statement.

Likewise, the company showed its support with additional donations throughout the year, such as the deliveries made in March and April to the field hospital set up at the Ifema Fair in Madrid. Also the “Jefes” ( clients) have collaborated in this campaign with the donation of 3,800 tons, which is equivalent to more than 63,000 cars, in the different kilo operations that have been carried out throughout the year.

A POLICY OF SUSTAINABLE SOCIAL ACTION

One of the commitments that Mercadona maintains with society is “to share part of what it receives from it”, the company assures. With this objective, the Social Responsibility Plan of the company, which addresses the social and ethical component through different sustainable lines of action that reinforce its commitment to shared growth.

Along with donating food, Mercadona Colaborate with 32 foundations and occupational centers in the decoration of their stores with trencadÃs murals, made by more than 1,000 people with intellectual disabilities. Another strategic line of the Social Responsibility Plan is sustainability.

To do this, it has an Environmental Management System its own, based on the principles of circular economy and focused on logistics optimization, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable production and reduction of plastic.

In this sense, Mercadona, together with its Totaler suppliers, is working on Strategy 6.25 to achieve a triple objective by 2025: reduce plastic 25%, that all containers of this material are recyclable, and recycle all plastic waste.

In addition, he works in the Sustainable Urban Distribution Project and in the improvement of air quality in cities through trucks and vans powered by cleaner and more efficient technologies.

Since 2011 he has been a partner of the United Nations Global Compact for the defense of fundamental values ​​regarding human rights, labor standards, the environment, and the fight against corruption.
