Mercedes-Benz partners with Stellantis and Total Energies in the production of batteries for electric vehicles

Mercedes-Benz today announced that it will join Stellantis and Total Energies as an equal partner in the Automotive Cells Company (ACC), whose mission is to manufacture batteries for electric vehicles.

Earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz revealed plans to fully switch to electric vehicles by 2030. Obviously, in order to achieve this goal, a lot of batteries will be needed, so even then the manufacturer announced that it plans to build eight gigawatt factories together with partners in order to be able to produce batteries with a total capacity of more than 200 GWh annually. Acquisition of a stake in ACC is a step towards this goal.

“Towards an all-electric future, Mercedes-Benz is acquiring a stake in European battery cell manufacturer Automotive Cells Company (ACC) to expand the development and production of next-generation high-performance battery cells and modules,” the manufacturer said. “As announced in July 2021, the Mercedes-Benz brand will be ready to fully switch to electricity by the end of the decade, wherever market conditions permit.”

The ACC joint venture was created by Stellantis and Total Energies last year. Its headquarters are in France, but it is not clear where the first battery factory will be located. It is known that the joint venture plans to invest more than 7 billion euros in production in order to have a production of battery cells in Europe by the end of the decade, capable of producing batteries with a total capacity of 120 GWh annually.
