Mercedes: customers will have to wait for new cars for more than a year due to a shortage of chips

It’s no secret that the semiconductor industry is currently going through hard times due to the high demand for chips and the resulting shortages. Automakers were among the first to experience the crisis. Many of them even had to suspend their factories due to the lack of chips. Even the Japanese giant Toyota, one of the world’s largest automakers, has suffered from a shortage, which had to temporarily close its assembly lines in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other countries in August. But one of the last to speak about the problems caused by the crisis in the semiconductor industry was the Mercedes-Benz brand.

The head of the brand Ola Kallenius in an interview with the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said that due to the current market situation, customers will have to wait for the delivery of ordered Mercedes cars for more than a year. He reiterated that the global semiconductor shortage, in his opinion, will continue until 2023. However, the head of Mercedes expects that next year he will not have as strong an impact on car production as he does now.

“The demand for Mercedes-Benz cars is huge, and at the same time, unfortunately, there are serious restrictions. For some models, the delivery time is now longer than we would like, and in some cases it is more than a year, ”said Kallenius.

By the way, in August, information appeared in the media that Mercedes refused to release almost all 2022 model year cars with a V8 engine in the United States due to problems with the supply of microcircuits. Recently, however, representatives of the brand denied this, saying that the abandonment of the V8 is due to problems with the quality of the motors, and not with a shortage of chips.
