President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said, during a virtual meeting of the Mercosur summit this Friday (17), that Brazil is striving to recover its economy in the post-pandemic with actions aimed at sustainable growth.
“The Brazilian government remains committed to economic recovery and sustainable growth,” Bolsonaro said at the meeting in which he hands over the bloc’s six-month presidency to Paraguayan president Mario Abdo BenÃtez.
The president also said that the economic crisis and the pandemic are at the center of action for the Brazilian government. “We proved the determination to protect our populations from the adverse effects of the social and economic crisis generated by the pandemic, and to offer vaccine to everyone in an accelerated way”, he said.
There was also a defense of productive integration in the Mercosur pharmaceutical sector, which, according to Bolsonaro, should serve to prevent the region from depending on foreign products.
“The pandemic has shown that we cannot be dependent on imports from outside our region in a sector so fundamental to the lives of our populations,” added the president.
Bolsonaro regretted that the bloc has not continued its work to review the levels of the Common External Tariff (TEC), which he classified as “a priority goal of the Brazilian semiannual presidency in Mercosur”.
“We regret that we have not reached an agreement on this topic this semester, despite Brazil’s efforts,” he said, adding that the topic will continue to be debated as it is a “priority” on the Brazilian agenda within the bloc, he concluded.
