Mercosur leaders had a face-to-face meeting scheduled for next Friday (17), but the Brazilian government, host of the event, decided to change the summit to a virtual format. The decision was attributed to concerns about the presence of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus in Brazil, but coincides with a recent standoff between the bloc’s countries over a relaxation of Mercosur rules so that members can separately negotiate trade agreements with other nations.
With different interests and priorities, Mercosur members are still seeking to conclude the agreement signed with the European Union in 2019 and are witnessing an increasing commercial impact from China in the region.
In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an overview of the crisis and divergence scenario in Mercosur. To describe the challenges and doubts about the future of South American integration, researcher Carlos Gustavo Poggio, professor of international relations at Faap, participates in this episode.
