With the meeting with the US Vice President, Kamala Harris German Chancellor kicks off official visit to Washington Angela Merkel.
The Vice President of the USA welcomed the German chancellor today at her official residence where he gave her breakfast, APE-MPE reports. Government spokesman Stephen Seibert had previously announced that an exchange of views would take place on the full range of German-American relations.
During her last trip to Washington as Chancellor, Merkel will be received today by US President Joe Biden at the White House at about 8 p.m. German time (9 pm Greek time).
The visit is aimed at marking a new beginning in Germany-US relations after the low point they reached during the presidency of Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump. Merkel is the first head of government from Europe to be accepted by Biden in the White House since taking office on January 20.
The US president invited Merkel last month to the sidelines of the G7 summit in Britain. For the chancellor will be the farewell visit to Washington, as Merkel will no longer run in the upcoming September elections for the federal parliament (Bundestag).
