Merkel rejects new closure of German borders

The Chancellor ‘Angela Merkel rejected the possibility of re-closing the borders of Germany due to the spread of the “Delta” variant of the main strain of the new coronavirus.

“(Border) controls last year were a test for Europe without borders,” Merkel told the German-French Parliamentary Assembly, adding: “I think we have learned a lesson and we have also learned how to work better together at regional level and to coordinate. ».

A similar view was taken by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, who, however, advocated the introduction of a test strategy for those returning to Germany from high-risk areas. “Local health authorities could control more strictly at a decentralized level,” an Interior Ministry spokesman told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Many of the state prime ministers have recently called for tougher measures on entering the country, but the teleconference held yesterday, Monday, between them and Chancellor Helge Brown ended without result, as, as BILD points out, no a specific credible proposal has been tabled. In addition, according to FAZ, some states, such as Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Bavaria, supported a clear tightening of measures, while other states made it clear that they considered it unnecessary.
